1993's Buckeye Children's Book Award winner for grades 3-5 was Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones by Alvin Schwartz.
Much like the first 2, the original books are illustrated by Stephen Gammell -- the ultimate in creepy pictures -- while the new version is illustrated by Brett Helquist.
Also just like the first 2, this is a series of terrifyingly scary short stories, complete with notes and a bibliography at the end. Perfect for story telling or giving a scare at night, these short stories are accentuated by the horrifying pictures by Gammell. The scariest by far is "Harold", which involves a murder. In my opinion, this is the scariest one out of the three!
Thankfully, my next story is not so scary! Did you have a favorite of the three in this series, Jill?
I was tempted to read one of these stories around the campfire I currently have set up in my media centers, but I think I will end up choosing one of the "funny-scary" stories instead of the truly scary ones. I don't want to give the kids who don't like scary stuff nightmares! In the meantime, I'll show the kids who do love it our scary section so they can scare themselves silly. :)
Next up -- Shiloh!
